Braden Montgomery injury: Texas A&M star placed in air cast after collision at the plate

Texas A&M and Oregon got off to a dramatic start in their super regional series, with both clubs scoring runs in the very first inning.

However, for A&M, there was another development which was not so positive. When trying to slide and score at home, Aggie star player Braden Montgomery was thrown out and then came up injured on the play.

He appeared to hurt his ankle and was eventually taken off the field in an air cast, which you can see in this video below:

An awful-looking scene for Montgomery, one of the premier players left in the NCAA Tournament; a superstar leader of the No. 3 overall seed and a likely future first round pick in the upcoming MLB Draft. As bad as it looks, this injury likely drastically impacts both A&M’s tournament run and Montgomery’s draft stock.

Shortly after Montgomery left the game, though, Brent Zwerneman reported that he did return to the dugout and sat on the bench in his cast: “Braden Montgomery back in the dugout for Aggies via ESPN, with his right foot propped up and in aircast,” he wrote on Twitter.

Here is a picture of Montgomery’s slide just as he starts it on the play where he was hurt:

That ankle does not appear to be pointing the correct direction right there. Just a nasty injury to one of the sport’s best talents.

The opening game against Oregon was certainly entertaining, with or without Montgomery. Before going out, he was part of an electric bottom of the first inning for the home team Aggies, and nearly added an extra run before being called out. A&M still added three runs to respond to the pair Oregon brought across in the top of the first.

But the Ducks came to hit the baseball, doubling their output to score four more runs in the top of the second, taking a 6-3 lead right back. A&M didn’t punch anything through in their turn of the second but they did finally hold Oregon scoreless in the top of the third and chipped away with a run in the bottom to make it 6-4 — then another in the fifth to make it 6-5 as of this writing.

Montgomery certainly doesn’t seem terribly likely to return to action this weekend, so Texas A&M might need some new names to step up and provide what’s missing without the Aggie star.
