BREAKING: 2023 Four-star QB Eli Holstein Decommits from Texas A&M
Texas A&M has lost their quarterback commit in the 2023 class as Zachary (La.) High four-star Eli Holstein announced on Twitter on Friday he would be decommitting from the Aggies
“I’d like to thank Texas A&M for giving me the opportunity to achieve my dreams of playing college football,” he said in a statement on Twitter. “Thank you to Coach Fisher and Coach Dickey for all that they have done for me and believing in me. I am still very interested in Texas A&M but with recent coaching changes and new opportunities I’d like to open my recruitment back up.”
He added.
“With that being said I am decommitting from Texas A&M and reopening my recruitment.”
Holstein is coming off a recent visit to Alabama and had been hearing from other schools like in-state LSU, Oregon and Miami, among others.
The loss of Holstein leaves the Aggies with just three commits in the 2023 class in Wylie East (Tex.) High four-star defensive lineman Anthony James, Converse (Tex.) Judson four-star defensive lineman Johnny Bowens and Spring Branch (Tex.) Smithson Valley three-star offensive lineman Colton Thomasson.
Holstein is coming off a junior season in which he led Zachary to an undefeated state championship, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns along the way. He committed to Texas A&M last summer, in June 2021, and had been an integral member in building the Aggies’ top-ten 2023 class thus far, with the aforementioned Thomasson, crediting Holstein as selling him on committing to Texas A&M.

Texas A&M did bring in two new quarterbacks in the 2022 cycle in Cypress (Tex.) Bridgeland four-star Conner Weigman and LSU transfer Max Johnson. In addition, the Aggies already have sophomore quarterback Haynes King and four walk-ons on the roster in Blake Bost, Zach Daniel, Colton Marwill and Jackson Oksnee.
The Aggies will take a tumble in the 2023 class rankings as Holstein was the Aggies highest-rated commit. The loss of the four-star now puts the Aggies outside the top ten in the 2023 rankings, with the No. 12 class nationally and the No. 4 class in the SEC.
Holstein is expected to still consider Texas A&M as a potential suitor, but the Aggies will assess other options as well. Texas A&M currently has offers out to four other quarterbacks in USC five-star commit Malachi Nelson, Long Beach (Cali.) Poly five-star Nico Iamaleava, Nashville (Tenn.) Montgomery Bell Academy four-star Marcel Reed and Las Vegas (Nev.) Dester Pines three-star Marquis Roby Jr. Expect the Aggies to look both in and out-of-state for their quarterback in the 2023 class, with names like Baton Rouge (La.) Woodlawn four-star Rickie Collins and Dripping Springs (Tex.) three-star Austin Novosad, who’s currently committed to Baylor, as two that could get offered by the Aggies in the near future.
