Buzz Williams admits there is more urgency for Texas A&M right now
After an 0-2 week, Texas A&M is back on the bubble in terms of the NCAA Tournament. That has put the pressure back on the Aggies according to Buzz Williams, even though, in his eyes, there’s a lot to consider as part of that.
Williams spoke about any increased urgency from their team during his press conference on Monday. He admitted that, while they approach every game the same way, there is probably more weight and importance as they come into their final six games.
“Yeah,” said Williams. “Maybe so, maybe so.”
However, as the season goes on, those circumstances are always changing. It changed for the Aggies when they started 0-2, they changed again when they won six of eight in conference play with a pair of Top-10 victories, and has since changed again following two losses on the road last week to Vanderbilt and at Alabama.
Now, at this point, all teams like Texas A&M can do is put their best out there and hope that the ever-fluctuating rankings in the NET come out in their favor by Selection Sunday.
“I think, when you play LSU in game number one, you’re hoping to win, you’re wanting to win. You lose and then you lose at Auburn,” recalled Williams. “Now you’re 0-2 and you’re like, ‘Geez – we’ve got to get going.'”
“I don’t know that a coach would necessarily say that any game is not urgent,” Williams continued. “From a value standpoint? I understand some are Quad 1, Quad 2, Quad 3 – I understand that. But the value of you win a Quad 1? That’s huge but I don’t know that it’s any, necessarily, different than the value of losing a Quad 3.”

After Saturday’s 25-point loss in Tuscaloosa, Texas A&M fell to 15-10 on the season. That record, as of today, has them at No. 45 in the NET, seventh highest in the Southeastern Conference. It also now has them back down to a No. 11 seed as one of the Last Four Byes in the latest Bracketology.
With the sport being 26 days away from Selection Sunday, every team is starting to feel some desperation. Seeding is on the line on a nightly basis to determine how the bracket will look come Saint Patrick’s Day.
Still, while the conditions continue to adjust over time, Williams is going to do what he can to not let them affect where he thinks his team currently stands.
“Does the urgency change based on the time of the year, based on previous results? Maybe. But I don’t, necessarily, think that a coach necessarily thinks of it differently,” said Williams.
