Texas A&M’s Andersson Garcia has been one of the better rebounders in school history and, as such, Buzz Williams has given him an appropriate nickname likening him to one of the best players to ever get on the glass.

In his postgame press conference after this weekend’s win, Williams deemed Garcia as the ‘Dominican Dennis Rodman’ for what he brings in rebounding.

“Andy is the Dominican Dennis Rodman,” said Williams. “When he’s through here and there’s no NCAA rules? I know some of you guys don’t think there are now. I’m going to buy him every Dennis Rodman shirt, flag, hat, paraphernalia.”

Simply, Williams knows how special that Garcia is on the boards. No matter what other teams try to do, there’s just not much to stop him sometimes when it comes to rebounding.

“He is a savant on the glass,” said Williams. “He commands so much attention and they’re doing a lot of things – not the University of Texas. Every team is doing a lot of things to prevent him from getting the ball.”

In his collegiate career at Mississippi State and Texas A&M, Garcia is averaging 5.6 rebounds a game. However, that statistic is up to 6.7 per game through three seasons in College Station, including a career-high of 9.1 last season where he 16 outings of double-digit rebounds. He’s doing it on both ends too with an average of three offensive boards a game within that number while with the Aggies.

With that, Garcia could still move into the top-ten all-time for the program in total rebounds and rebounding average as he’s currently fifth in rebounding percentage.

Dominican Dennis has been one of several great guys on the glass, even on this team, for Williams. He’ll now hope to see him continue to earn that nickname, Rodman knickknacks or not, through the rest of his final season of eligibility.

Williams’ hilarious reaction after winning trophy for Lone Star Showdown

Following an 80-60 win over Texas on Saturday, Buzz Williams sat down for his postgame press conference next to a trophy shaped like the state of Texas. It was the award for him and the Aggies for winning the rivalry game in the Lone Star Showdown.

Of course, Williams seemed to have no idea what it was.

“Yeah, I was wondering what this was,” Williams said.

A reporter informed him about the rivalry with Texas and the accompanying trophy, wondering if it was something Buzz Williams would be proud of winning.

“Sure…what is it?” Williams quipped.

After being informed about the nature of the trophy, Williams tried to explain it back to the reporters he was carrying on the conversation with.

“They just keep passing this back and forth?” he asked. “Yeah, and so I know this sounds wrong…So the University of Texas brought this to tonight’s game because they won the football game? So when we play in Austin you’re going to carry it back?”

At that point, a team official informed Buzz Williams that there are actually two trophies, so neither school has to worry much about transport.

“That doesn’t even make sense,” Williams said. “So what, we just, if you win you get to like show it for a day or until you play again?”
