Buzz Williams explains his 'condescending' thoughts on Kentucky's offense after loss

Texas A&M dropped its second SEC game in a row in the 81-69 loss to Kentucky on Tuesday. As Aggies head coach Buzz Williams expected, the Wildcats found their rhythm from beyond the arc and in transition

After the game, Williams admitted that he was entertained by Mark Pope’s offense while anaylzing Kentucky in the film room leading up to the SEC matchup. He explained what makes Pope’s squad different.

“I really enjoyed studying it. I know that sounds condescending, and I mean it in the most respectful way,” Williams said. “Really good players, a lot of variety to the skill as you know. But I think the utilization of the talent and the skill considering the newness of the coach and his staff and the players. That’s really difficult to do.”

Kentucky’s emphasis on passing led to 19 assists during the contest, some of which led to the Wildcats’ 16 past break points during the contest. Their fast break points and 3-point baskets together (43) accounted for over half of Kentucky’s scoring during the contest.

The Wildcats were led by Jaxson Robinson‘s 22 points, who has turned into one of UK’s most reliable hands this season. Andrew Carr and Otega Oweh combined for 24 points as well, while Amari Williams nearly logged another double-double this season with eight points and 12 rebounds.

“I have not seen any of their practices or their film sessions but the teaching that is going on and the Itinerary of the practices-for them to have the execution that they have — remarkable,” Williams continued. “The third best offense in the country. That puts stress on you in transition, that puts stress on you immediately following transition. And, as soon as it goes to #22 (Amari Williams) or #10 (Brandon Garrison), they begin to run the coach’s offense and that is a different type of stress.

“There are three versions of stress and they are potent in each category.”

Tuesday’s matchup is the only time the two programs will meet during the regular season. They played twice last season, with the second meeting coming in the SEC Tournament semifinal, where the Aggies upset the Wildcats to advance to the finals.

Texas A&M will look to snap its two-game losing streak and get back on the right track beginning on Saturday at home against LSU. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. ET live on the SEC Network.
