Following an 80-60 win over rival Texas on Saturday, Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams sat down for his postgame press conference next to a trophy shaped like the state of Texas.

It was awarded for winning the game, the Lone Star Showdown, a gesture both programs are privileged to share after beating the other in one of college sports’ most contested rivalries.

Of course, coach Buzz Williams seemed to have no idea what it was.

“Yeah, I was wondering what this was,” Williams said after the game.

A reporter informed him about the rivalry with Texas and the accompanying trophy, wondering if it was something Buzz Williams would be proud of winning.

“Sure… what is it?” Williams quipped.

After being informed about the nature of the trophy, Williams tried to explain it back to the reporters he was carrying on the conversation with.

“They just keep passing this back and forth?” he asked. “Yeah, and so I know this sounds wrong… so the University of Texas brought this to tonight’s game because they won the football game? So when we play in Austin you’re going to carry it back?”

At that point, a team official informed Buzz Williams that there are actually two trophies, so neither school has to worry much about transport.

“That doesn’t even make sense,” Williams said. “So what, we just, if you win you get to like show it for a day or until you play again?”

The Texas A&M coach had other questions, too. He pointed to the placard on the trophy and began inquiring.

“Well what is Cotton Holdings? That’s the company that’s (sponsoring)?” he said. “Oh, that’s the sticker on the floor. That’s important. OK, well does Cotton Holdings know that there’s two trophies and we’re just like … you think they know?”

Buzz Williams paused as the room burst into laughter. Not finished, he almost half-heartedly apologized for not being more aware of the tradition.

“They may be upset by this exposure right here,” Williams said, getting up from his chair. “Yeah, we’re excited.”
