The 2024-25 college basketball season has been a phenomenal one for the SEC with the depth of the conference on full display. That depth was on full display Saturday when the Texas A&M Aggies dropped a home game to the Tennessee Volunteers.

After the game, Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams shared some thoughts on the game and conference, breaking down what the final weeks of the SEC schedule are going to look like for the Aggies.

“It’s tit for tat,” Buzz Williams said. “It’s chess, it’s checkmate. A lot of the same pieces were playing the same boards so to say. I thought our game at Missouri was an unbelievable atmosphere, unbelievable college game to start early February and I thought this was very similar. Thankful for the students that were here, the people that were here. I thought the environment was tremendous and I thought it was a really good game.”

Tennessee traveled to College Station on Saturday where two of the best teams in the SEC and the country as a whole took one another head-to-head. It was a back-and-forth game that saw the Aggies win the rebounding battle but lose the turnover battle on the way to a Volunteers’ win.

“We’re disappointed in the results, but I feel — my feelings do not matter whatsoever,” Williams said. “But I do think that how our organization felt after the loss on Tuesday to start week eight, a little different than how our organization feels to conclude week eight. That’s a credit to Coach [Rick Barnes]. That’s a credit to their players. That’s a credit to their team. Same with Mississippi State.”

Following the game, Texas A&M fell to 9-5 in SEC play and a three-way tie for fourth place in the SEC standings. That’s on the back of what is now a two-game losing streak, dropping games to two AP-ranked teams in Tennessee and Mississippi State.

The schedule won’t get easier from here for Texas A&M. In their final four games, the Aggies still need to take on Florida and Auburn, which Buzz Williams knows is going to present a massive test ahead of the SEC Tournament.

“So I’m not trying to be condescending or arrogant in what I’m saying,” Williams said. “But probably not being a prophet, that’s probably what it’s about to be from here on out home. Home and road the next two weeks and the fight and the intensity and the physicality continues to ramp up.”

Next, Williams and the Aggies will focus on Vanderbilt, hoping to avoid a third loss in a row when the Commodores come to College Station on Wednesday.
