The college basketball season is still in its early stages. Still, Texas A&M Aggies head coach Buzz Williams believes that his team has some significant areas to improve in if they want to go dancing at the end of the season. Following the Aggies’ 72-54 victory on Sunday against Oregon State, Williams shared where Texas A&M needs continued improvement as they begin to get into the meat of their schedule.

“I do think the things that we talked about, since the loss to Boise State, even in the three losses, there are a lot of similarities in those three losses. Defensive rebounding is one of them, fouling, our coverage on the weak side relative to three-point shooting, and ball screen coverage,” said Williams. “I think that’s where we spent an inordinate amount of time this week, and I do a lot of those things came to life. But I think that there is still room for improvement relative to the schedule, even the next game, for that matter. Those things have gotta be better by the time we play next Saturday.”

The Aggies struggled early on against the Beavers trailing them 30-26 at the half. A good amount of those issues Williams was referring to came up in the first half, along with limited productivity from his bench. However, Texas A&M was able to get the ball rolling in the second half and dominated Oregon State to win the game by 18 points.

Up next for Texas A&M will be a matchup against the Memphis Tigers on Saturday. Memphis is off to a hot start with an 8-2. And the Aggies will need to be more polished than they were on Saturday if they want to pick up the victory.

Williams critical of bench’s performance in win

Texas A&M‘s men’s basketball team picked up their sixth win of the season on Sunday at home against Oregon State. The Aggies won in convincing fashion 72-54, but head coach Buzz Williams was not pleased with the contribution he received from his bench. After the game, Williams aired out his grievances with his bench’s performance despite the victory.

“In the first half, every player off the bench was a negative in the plus/minus category, and every starter was a positive. In the second half, well for the game, I thought solo played his best game. And then every other player that came off the bench finished with a negative. That is not always the indicator, but it is for sure an indicator and the plus/minus category,” said Williams.

Texas A&M was able to overcome a four-point deficit at the half out, scoring Oregon State 46-24. The Aggies also finished with four players in double figures, one of which was off the bench. And although Soloman Washington did have a good game, finishing with seven points on a perfect night shooting from the field; the top scorer off the bench was guard Manny Obaseki with 11 points.
