Report: Charges dismissed against Ainias Smith in DWI case
The decision is in on Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith. All charges have been dropped against him, according to local attorney Craig Greening, via Fox 26’s Mark Berman.
Smith was arrested July 20 for driving while intoxicated and carrying an unlawful weapon, the Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman first reported. He was supposed to attend SEC Media Days in Atlanta, but ended up missing the trip as he dealt with the situation.
During his press conference, Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said he couldn’t comment or provide an update on Smith because of the investigation. Smith was suspended after the arrest, per school policy.
“With Ainias, we’re gathering all the evidence and the things that go on and then we’ll make a comment,” Fisher said. “We have no comment at this time.”
Smith is the second Texas A&M wide receiver to have a run-in with police this offseason. Demond Demas was arrested by police in connection with an assault family violence charge. He eventually left the program by entering the transfer portal.

More on Ainias Smith
Last year, Smith played a key role in the Aggies offense and looked primed for a big year in 2022. He had a team-high 47 receptions for 509 yards and six touchdowns as Texas A&M went 8-4 overall and 4-4 in SEC play.
There have been outlets to name Smith to preseason All-American teams and he was even identified as one of six players not receiving enough NFL Draft attention by On3’s Matt Zenitz. He also received third team preseason All-SEC honors from the media on July 22 when the league announced the preseason poll.
Fisher has been working on fixing the wide receiver room in College Station, even with some of the off-the-field issues. Texas A&M signed the On3 Consensus‘ No. 2 and No. 3 receiver in the 2022 class with Evan Stewart and Chris Marshall.
On3’s Griffin McVeigh contributed to this report.
