Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher made sure to mention Max Johnson‘s name more often than not when asked questions regarding fellow quarterback Conner Weigman at SEC Media Days.

Weigman is the long-rumored starter, but Fisher wouldn’t budge on the matter. Discussing the Aggies’ quarterback situation with On3’s Andy Staples during the premiere episode of his new podcast, SEC analyst Cole Cubelic believes the competition has all but wrapped up.

“Conner Weigman will be the starter,” Cubelic told Staples. “They can compete all they want, but he’s going to be the starter. Kind of similar to the Auburn thing. They’ll still tell you Robby Ashford is in it. He’ll play some, but he’s not going to be the starting quarterback.

“Weigman is a better athlete than people know about. He was an elite baseball recruit, he moves better than people think. We had him twice down the stretch down the stretch last year and the guys love him. Jimbo [Fisher] talked about how well he adapted to the play-calling and managing things.”

When Fisher was asked how close he believes Weigman, a former five-star recruit in the 2022 class, is to becoming an elite college quarterback, Fisher said that he likes both of his quarterbacks — but when Weigman got his chance, he didn’t disappoint.

On top of that, even when sticking Johnson’s name into the mix during his time at the podium on Monday, the Aggies’ head coach couldn’t help but rave about what he’s seen out of the former blue-chip prospect.

“You’re talking about a guy that went in and played in some great games, took us to almost — won an Ole Miss game on the road,” Fisher said. “We had a tough time. Come back and played a great LSU team and played extremely well. Never had a turnover; had eight touchdowns, high completion percentage, poise and understanding. He’s athletic.

“You’ve got to remember now, he probably would have been a top two or three-round pick in the baseball draft if he goes a year ago. He was a shortstop. This guy is a very gifted guy who can play, and very excited about his future and what he can be, and just love his whole makeup and demeanor.”

Weigman finished last season with 896 passing yards and on 55.3 completion percentage. Throwing no interceptions on 132 total passing attempts along with eight interceptions is beyond impressive for an SEC quarterback regardless of position on the depth chart. He also added 97 rushing yards on 27 attempts, so he can factor into the run game as well.
