Conner Weigman gets endorsement of Jimbo Fisher
Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher was forced to turn to true freshman quarterback Conner Weigman after starter Haynes King exited with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter Saturday against South Carolina.
The Aggies were already trailing 24-21 when Weigman entered with 14:12 remaining and went on to lose 30-24. However, Weigman still finished the game a solid 8-of-13 passing for 91 yards, and Fisher was pleased with what he saw in his one quarter of play.
“Well, he had preparation,” Fisher said. “He prepared all week knowing exactly what we were going to do. He had a great week of practice. He’s practiced the last couple of weeks and done a great job. Like I said, he’s ready to play. We feel very good in what he’s doing. He went out and kept good poise and played like I thought — and I thought he would do well.”

A five-star recruit, Weigman ranked as the No. 4 quarterback and No. 29 overall player in the 2022 class according to On3 Consensus. He was one of nine five-stars brought in by the Aggies this offseason, and thought to be a building block for the future along with receiver Evan Stewart.

However, due to injuries, Weigman may be thrust into the spotlight even sooner. There is no word on whether King will be ready to play Week 9 against Ole Miss, and quarterback Max Johnson has already been ruled out for the “foreseeable future” after suffering a broken hand. But if Jimbo Fisher ultimately has to start Conner Weigman next Saturday, he is confident the freshman can get the job done.
“I don’t have anything bad about Conner right now,” he said. “He’s getting better and better in practice each week and now that Max has been out he’s getting even more and more reps. It’s good to see him get better and better and more comfortable with the things we’re doing.”
Texas A&M is 3-4 (1-3 SEC) so far this season and in the midst of a three-game losing streak. However, three of its losses this season have come by six points or less. The Aggies will aim to get back on the right track when they kick off against No. 15 Ole Miss (7-1, 3-1) at 6:30 p.m. CT in College Station.
