Consider Conner Weigman a fan of freshly-minted Texas A&M offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino.

Many were caught off guard by Jimbo Fisher bringing in the former SEC head coach to be his lead offensive mind, but it’s evident his quarterback is a fan. Speaking with the media, Weigman explained why he’s been impressed with Petrino thus far.

“I mean, I love him. I mean, he’s a very smart guy,” elaborated the Aggies quarterback. “He gives us like, every little detail of what we need to know about a play, and I mean, that’s what it takes to be a quarterback.

“You’ve got to know what’s going on, and just to really have the input coming from him in a positive way, it’s been huge. It’s been really fun to get coached by Coach Petrino.”

Last season, Weigman started the final four games for the Aggies, and will battle Max Johnson for the starting job over the next month. He flashed his potential last season, with a program freshman record 338 yards passing against Ole Miss.

Perhaps Bobby Petrino can unlock something within Conner Weigman. The potential is there, now it’s his time to make good on it.

Conner Weigman on Texas A&M players being overlooked: ‘I like to be under the radar’

Moreover, expectations are neither too high nor too low for Texas A&M entering the 2023 season, and that’s how quarterback Conner Weigman prefers it. Coming off of a 5-7 season, the Aggies were picked to finish third in the SEC West behind Alabama and LSU

One might argue that’s even a bit generous considering A&M’s last-place finish a year ago. However, the Aggies fared a lot worse in the preseason All-SEC team, with Ainias Smithbeing the only player named to the first team as an all-purpose player.

Asked specifically about the omission of receiver Evan Stewart from any of the preseason All-SEC teams, Weigman said A&M is motivated by the chance to be the underdog.

“It’s cool. I like to be under the radar,” the QB said. “Don’t have too many expectations and go out and shock the world. I feel like that’s what were gonna do.”

Sometimes it’s better to be under the radar, just ask last season’s Texas A&M squad. Conner Weigman and company are out to shock people in 2023, and we’re not going to put that possibility above them.
