Texas A&M QB commit Conner Weigman accounted for eight touchdowns on national television.

If Max Johnson is not able to go for Texas A&M this week against Alabama, head coach Jimbo Fisher will have two options. Haynes King, who won the starting job out of fall camp, or true freshman Conner Weigman would be the Aggies’ starter in what should be a hostile atmosphere in Tuscaloosa. However, when Johnson did get hurt on Saturday, it was King who stepped in.

Fisher was asked if Weigman would have a shot at earning the job if Johnson is unavailable. The Texas A&M head coach said there will be competition in the days leading up to the game. But Fisher did have high praise for the freshman, saying he “can” play if called upon.

“They’ll compete every day,” Fisher said. “The best player is going to play. Conner can play. We could put him in right now. I mean, he would be very comfortable. He’ll have a great week of practice hopefully and be ready to play. He prepares every week just like that.”

To this point, Weigman has been the third-string quarterback and has not gotten any action. He was a spring semester enrollee for Texas A&M — meaning he’s had an extra few months of work in the offense. At the very least, Weigman is not working with anything brand new.

Weigman was a part of the historic recruiting class in College Station, being one of the many five-star prospects. The On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services, had him No. 29 overall and No. 8 in the state of Texas.

Update provided on Texas A&M QB Max Johnson

Johnson injured his hand in the midst of Texas A&M‘s loss to Mississippi State and was not able to return. Now, the biggest game of the season is not on the schedule for the Aggies, traveling to Tuscaloosa for a game against Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

During his Monday press conference, head coach Jimbo Fisher spoke on Johnson but was not able to give much of an update. He said the quarterback will be evaluated throughout the week and “day-to-day” heading into the Alabama matchup.

“No,” Fisher said when asked if there was an update. “We’ll go day-to-day. Just banged his hand. We’ll evaluate him as we go, day-to-day.”

Johnson has started the last three games for Texas A&M, taking over after King struggled in the first two matchups of the year.
