When you have a young quarterback such as Conner Weigman, surrounding him with high-level receivers makes the growing pains easier. Especially when a new play caller is rolling into College Station, with Bobby Petrino supposedly taking over for Jimbo Fisher. The plan for Texas A&M remains the same, though.

Instead of forcing Weigman to be Superman, the Aggies want to get their impressive receivers into space and let them make plays.

“Just to be able to throw the ball to these receivers,” Weigman said. “I feel like we have one of the best-receiving cores in the country. Just be able to give them the ball in space and let them go make plays. I feel like that’s what we’re going to do.”

And when Evan Stewart is on your roster, that’s a pretty solid game plan. Stewart was Texas A&M’s top receiver with 53 receptions for 649 yards. Considering he was a Five-Star Plus+ prospect coming out of Frisco (TX) Liberty, the early results are good. Despite being snubbed from the preseason All-SEC team, Stewart is poised for a breakout season.

You can also add Moose Muhammad, Ainias Smith, and even potential breakout star Noah Thomas into the mix.

Weigman is going to have some guys to throw to. His job could wind up being easy if the receivers live up to the standard their quarterback holds them at.

“I told all the receivers ‘it’s coming. One-on-one, it’s coming. I expect y’all to go and make plays.’ I trust them over anyone,” Weigman said. “I feel like they’re going to step up and nine times out of 10, they’re going to make that play. And I’m going to give them a chance every single time…

“Give them the ball and let them make plays. It’s that simple. It’s what I was trying to tell Evan the other day — just throw a hitch and let him go 60 yards. That’s the best feeling as a quarterback.”

At some point, Texas A&M will call upon Weigman to make plays. Any quarterback in the SEC will have to do so in order to win games. But having a talented wide receiver group certainly takes the pressure off the shoulders over the course of four quarters.

Getting the tempo moving under Petrino will cause matchup problems across the board, leaving for chunk plays. Something Texas A&M is certainly looking to improve upon from last season.
