David Pollack makes case for Max Johnson as Texas A&M quarterback
Like a handful of college programs across the country, the Texas A&M Aggies are in the final stages of deliberation of choosing their starting quarterback for the season. The Aggies have a talented group at quarterback with sophomore Haynes King and transfer from LSU Max Johnson as the two frontrunners for the spot. And if former Georgia Bulldogs linebacker turned ESPN analyst for College Gameday David Pollack had a say in the Aggies’ decision-making, he would go with Johnson over King.
During a recent breakdown of the college football season, Pollack explains why he has so much faith in the former Tiger and makes a bold prediction on Texas A&M’s future with him at the helm.
“Max Johnson is going to be the guy; I can tell you that. What I saw from Max at LSU, I like enough to say that he’s going to be the guy and it’s going to be way better than it was in previous years. That I can guarantee,” said Pollack.

Last season for LSU, Johnson was thrust into the starting position after Myles Brennan went down for the second-straight season with a season-ending injury. And the six-foot-five junior from Athens, GA, put together a decent 2021 campaign. Johnson completed 225 of his 373 pass attempts for 2,815 yards with 27 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Not to mention, he did all of that with multiple injuries piling up for the Tigers all last season, including his go-to star target at receiver Kayshon Boutte suffering a season-ending injury.

“Max Johnson can do some elite things when it comes to processing. Max Johnson can do a lot of Jimbo Fisher-type things that he wants him to do, go through progressions. Max Johnson will stare down the barrel and get smacked in the face, and deliver a strike. And I think he’s got enough mobility to make plays. I’ve seen more from Max; so I trust Max a lot more, and that’s why if I were to pick one guy, I would roll with Max.
Johnson’s ability to make plays while everything around him smells of smoke and looks like fire makes him a key offseason pickup for the Aggies. And if he’s able to win the Texas A&M starting quarterback position, expect him to continue his streak of solid quarterback play and quite possibly lead the Aggies to the College Football Playoffs.
