Texas A&M defensive back Jacoby Mathews was arrested by university police on Tuesday. The sophomore had less than two ounces of marijuana in his possession, leading to his arrest. Mathews has since been released on a $3,000 bond paid on the same day.

According to law in the state of Texas, up to two ounces of marijuana is a Class B misdemeanor and punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine. The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Texas A&M is “looking into” the incident.

Mathews is entering his second season with the Aggies after a successful freshman campaign. He was able to make 10 appearances while starting in the final three games. A member of the historic Texas A&M 2022 recruiting class, Mathews is expected to play a big role on defense this season.

In those 10 games played, 25 tackles were recorded by Mathews. A career-best 15 tackles game in College Station during the home loss to Florida. Potential was being shown by Mathews in the first year of defensive coordinator DJ Durkin.

Mathews played high school football at Ponchatoula (LA) High School, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 32 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Before ultimately winding up at Texas A&M, Mathews was an LSU commit at one point. Florida and Texas were involved in his recruitment as well before head coach Jimbo Fisher won out. An impressive pull for the state of Louisiana.

Mathews drew a comparison to former Alabama and now New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney coming out of high school. Both of their ability to play on the offensive side of the ball, albeit at different positions, was mentioned as well in the scouting report.

“Xavier McKinney was a highly instinctive safety who showed outstanding recognition skills and play speed while leading his high school team to deep playoff runs as a prospect in the 2017 cycle,” On3 said. “The same can be said for Jacoby Mathews. Both share similar size (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) and athleticism at the same stage, while Mathews has longer arms.

“Both McKinney and Mathews also played offense at times during their high school careers. McKinney played receiver for Roswell (Ga.) High, while Mathews saw time at quarterback and receiver at Ponchatoula (La.) High.”
