Texas A&M defensive coordinator DJ Durkin believes Bobby Petrino, his counterpart on the offensive side of the football for the Aggies, has been a tremendous addition.

Jimbo Fisher went out and hired Petrino over the offseason, and it’s paying dividends throughout his football team. Speaking with the media, Durkin had nothing but praise for Petrino, explaining why he’s been so great for the program.

“Did not know Bobby at all, but obviously knew of him, and followed his track record very closely. He has been a tremendous addition to our staff, for our team,” said Durkin. “I love going against him every day. He prepares you, as a defense, to be ready for a lot of things.

“I think he’s a tremendous football coach, and I just really think he is — there’s been noticeable help for our staff and our players, as we moved through spring and on to training camp.”

Even though their paths didn’t cross prior, it’s evident that Durkin had a ton of respect for Petrino. That thought process has been vindicated thus far, and it’s creating some new expectations for the program.

If Texas A&M is to bounce back in 2023, they’re going to need Bobby Petrino and DJ Durkin to be at the top of their coaching game, and it looks like they’re helping each other out in that regard moving forward.

Conner Weigman opens up about what’s impressed him the most about Bobby Petrino

Continuing, consider Conner Weigman also a fan of freshly-minted Texas A&M offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino.

Many were caught off guard by Jimbo Fisher bringing in the former SEC head coach to be his lead offensive mind, but it’s evident his quarterback is a fan. Speaking with the media, Weigman explained why he’s been impressed with Petrino thus far.

“I mean, I love him. I mean, he’s a very smart guy,” elaborated the Aggies quarterback. “He gives us like, every little detail of what we need to know about a play, and I mean, that’s what it takes to be a quarterback.

“You’ve got to know what’s going on, and just to really have the input coming from him in a positive way, it’s been huge. It’s been really fun to get coached by Coach Petrino.”

Last season, Weigman started the final four games for the Aggies, and will battle Max Johnson for the starting job over the next month. He flashed his potential last season, with a program freshman record 338 yards passing against Ole Miss

Perhaps Bobby Petrino can unlock something within Conner Weigman. The potential is there, now it’s his time to make good on it.
