Former Texas A&M star and starting center for the Celtics Robert Williams has been essential to Boston’s success throughout the 2021-22 season. However, the Celtics were delivered crushing news when Williams suffered a torn meniscus on Sunday.

At the time of the injury, the former first-round draft pick was averaging a career-high 10 points and 9.6 rebounds for the Celtics. Additionally, Boston has made it to the top of the Eastern Conference, and they’re looking to stay there. Luckily, there’s a chance Williams could return to the court for the Celtics this season.

As Williams went under the knife on Wednesday, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN provided a timetable for his possible return to the court.

“After undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee Wednesday morning, Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III is expected to return within four to six weeks — a timetable that could land him back in the lineup as soon as the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs,” wrote Wojnarowski. “The Celtics announced Williams underwent a successful meniscectomy Wednesday morning at New England Baptist Hospital.

“There was some initial optimism of a return on the shorter end of the timeline, sources told ESPN. The Eastern Conference semifinals are expected to start around May 1.”

As you can see, that’s great news for the Celtics and their star center. Continuing, the former Texas A&M star took to Twitter to thank the basketball world for their support in this trying time for himself.

“Surgery went well, Preciate all the prayers and concern!” tweeted Williams on Wednesday.

The Celtics will miss Robert Williams while he’s not on the floor. Luckily, the team could see him return to the fold before it’s all said and done this season.

More on Robert Williams, Boston Celtics

Robert Williams, an Oil City, Louisiana, native, went No. 27 overall to the Celtics in the 2018 NBA Draft. He’s contributing more than ever before and he leads his team on the glass. In fact, the fourth-year player is 17th in the NBA in rebounds per game.

Leading up to his injury, Williams started all 61 games for Boston this season. Last year, he only started 13 games in 52 games played. He had one of his highest-scoring games of the season on Sunday night versus the Minnesota Timberwolves before suffering the injury. He had 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. The 6-foot-9 center also added a block and a steal.

The former Aggie signed a four-year, $54 million contract extension with the Celtics in August of last year, securing his future with the NBA franchise.

In two seasons at Texas A&M, Robert Williams was an unstoppable force. He was a rebound shy of averaging a double-double as a senior, despite only playing 26 minutes a game. He shot 63% from the field. For his efforts, the SEC’s coaches voted him as co-defensive player of the year.

Moreover, the Boston Celtics are in their first year under the watch of former Nets assistant Ime Udoka. Udoka spent seven years coaching in Texas under Gregg Popovich with the Spurs.
