Texas A&M point guard Hassan Diarra will transfer to his home state of Connecticut to play for UConn during the 2022-23 season, he announced via Twitter. Diarra spent the first two years of his college career far away in College Station, but is now set to make an East Coast homecoming with the Huskies.

Last season, Hassan Diarra averaged 6.2 points, 1.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds over 15.4 minutes for the Aggies. Coming out of the Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Connecticut, Diarra was a four-star recruit, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. Additionally, Diarra was the No. 1 recruit out of Connecticut in 2020, as well as the No. 11 point guard and No. 51 prospect overall in the nation, per On3 Consensus.

“For the past two years, Aggieland has been my home and will forever hold a place in my heart,” Diarra wrote. “I am grateful for all the amazing things we were able to accomplish this year, starting with my teammates who day in and day out battled and left it all on the floor, my coaches for pushing us every day, and last but not least, the 12th man for all the love and support. To my Aggieland family, thank you and I am honored to have worn this jersey.

“I want to thank coach Buzz (Williams), coach Devin (Johnson) and coach (Steve Roccaforte) and the rest of the staff for taking a chance on me. I also want to extend my gratitude to all the coaches that have reached out to me during the process the past couple of weeks. …With that said, I’m excited to announce that I am committing to the UConn Huskies!”

Diarra was part of an Aggies team that finished 2021-22 with an incredible postseason run. Although they didn’t make the NCAA Tournament, they appeared in both the SEC Tournament Championship and NIT Championship games. Texas A&M ultimately lost both contests, but the runs through both tournaments provided an entertaining finish to a 27-13 season.

Among point guards, Hassan Diarra projects as one of the top available transfer players. His On3 Consensus rating would put him at No. 3 among point guards who have decided to enter the transfer portal this offseason.
