Greg McElroy believes Jimbo Fisher needs to have a big year at Texas A&M in 2023 or else.

No, McElroy isn’t thinking Fisher will be fired. However, he does believe some serious changes could be coming behind the scene, as the former Alabama quarterback explained on his Always College Football show earlier in the week.

“Let’s go next to Jimbo Fisher, it shouldn’t require a whole lot of conversation. I don’t think he’s in jeopardy of losing his job. A lot of people seem to think that he is. I don’t agree with that,” explained McElroy. “I think that Jimbo Fisher, in order to continue the financial support that he’s received from his boosters, he needs to have a winning season. If for whatever reason they fall flat again and they disappoint again, then we can’t point to the youth. We can’t point to the inexperience. We can’t point to this, we can’t point to that. We can only point to the head coach, and he needs to have a big year to break through.

“The good news is, I think A&M is on the verge of having a really nice season.”

Alas, McElroy isn’t alone in his sentiment that Texas A&M will be much improved this coming season. On3’s JD PicKell recently explained he’s on the Aggies rebound train as well, believing they could be a spoiler for this season’s College Football Playoff based on their schedule.

“The floor for Texas A&M? I think we already saw. I can’t imagine a season too much worse than last year where you lose to App State. But the ceiling for Texas A&M, I think, is fascinating,” PicKell said. “And just throw wins and losses out of it for just a second. Like, could Texas A&M be a nine win football team? Sure. But look at who they play, look at the ripple effect they could put on the rest of college football, man. They could put a dent in this College Football Playoff race.”

“They play ‘Bama in College Station. Remember, Texas A&M almost beat ‘Bama at ‘Bama last year. At Tennessee? Who knows what they’re going to be. They’re a team that I think deserves some College Football Playoff attention. At LSU? They’re thinking College Football Playoff,” said PicKell. “Like, if Texas A&M were to be on their game and to be a force? Let’s just say they show up for one of those games. That changes the complexion of the entire College Football Playoff race.”

One thing is for sure, Jimbo Fisher has to do some more winning that he’s done at Texas A&M in 2023. The clock is ticking, and while it’s not midnight yet, the dusk is seeping in through the clouds in College Station.
