Jimbo Fisher on whether Max Johnson could play Saturday: 'We're repping our guys'
Two games into the season and Texas A&M has quarterback issues. Haynes King was named the starter by head coach Jimbo Fisher but thus far, results have not been pretty for the Longview native. There has been buzz around LSU transfer Max Johnson getting some first-team reps but nothing has been determined.
Fisher gave an update on his two quarterbacks during Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference but did not give too much away. When asked if Johnson was taking more first-team reps, the Texas A&M head coach was not willing to get into specifics. However, he did say the Aggies are “looking at everything” heading into Saturday’s game.
“We’re repping our guys,” Fisher said. “We’re repping them. I’m not going to elaborate on who’s taking what reps with what groups or what we’re going to do on Saturday. But we’re looking at everything.”
King has completed 64.7% of his throws this season but only 461 passing yards through two games. He also has three touchdowns compared to two interceptions. Combine the results with how King began last year and a lot has been left to desire.
Texas A&M has a massive nonconference game against Miami this week, needing to bounce back after a loss to Appalachian State. Whoever Fisher decides to get the majority of snaps, they will have to play at a level we have yet to see this season.
On3’s J.D. PicKell ready for QB change from Jimbo Fisher
If Fisher is going to make a change, sign On3’s J.D. PicKell up as a fan of the move. He said on a recent episode of The Hard Count that Johnson needs to get into the game, citing King’s poor performances against non-SEC opponents heading into conference play.

“In three games from Haynes King, as a starting quarterback, he has thrown five touchdowns and five interceptions,” PicKell said. He did not count the Colorado game in 2021, where King was injured.
“You say, okay, it’s not great. You never want to see that number, but who was he playing against? Right, Texas A&M in the SEC, they play against some of the best competition in the country.”
Ultimately, this is Jimbo Fisher’s decision to make. But, from J.D. PicKell’s perspective, what the Aggies are doing now isn’t working. Max Johnson is sitting on the bench and he’s proven he can be an effective SEC quarterback in the past.
“A&M, if they continue to play Haynes King, is not done losing these kinds of games. Your move Texas A&M.”
