JD PicKell: It's time for a change at quarterback in College Station
Through two weeks, Texas A&M has struggled on offense and lost to an unranked App State at home. Quarterback Haynes King doesn’t look like he’s ready, and with LSU transfer Max Johnson sitting on the bench, it might be time for a quarterback change in College Station.
This is a decision that head coach Jimbo Fisher needs to make sooner or later. Expectations were incredibly high for Texas A&M ahead of the season and a talented Miami team is coming to College Station this week, before the Aggies open SEC play against a top-10 Arkansas team.
On3’s J.D. PicKell explained why he feels it’s time for a change in College Station.

“In three games from Haynes King, as a starting quarterback, he has thrown five touchdowns and five interceptions,” J.D. PicKell said. He did not count the Colorado game in 2021, where King was injured.
“You say, okay, it’s not great. You never want to see that number, but who was he playing against? Right, Texas A&M in the SEC, they play against some of the best competition in the country.”
The problem is that those three opponents that he has finished his starts against are Kent State, Sam Houston State, and App State. All of those games were also home games in College Station. Even crediting App State as a very good Sun Belt team, those are all teams Texas A&M should beat easily, given their status in the sport.

“I keep going back to the same metaphor. You have so many ingredients at Texas A&M, but if you don’t have that crucial ingredient, that key ingredient, to put it all together–it’s all for naught.”
Ultimately, this is Jimbo Fisher’s decision to make. But, from J.D. PicKell’s perspective, what the Aggies are doing now isn’t working. Max Johnson is sitting on the bench and he’s proven he can be an effective SEC quarterback in the past.
“A&M, if they continue to play Haynes King, is not done losing these kinds of games. Your move Texas A&M.”
