Texas A&M is one win away from the College World Series after taking down Oregon on Saturday. Head coach Jim Schlossnagle has one of the best teams in the country but the lineup is going to look a whole lot different moving forward after an injury to Braden Montgomery.

After a collision at the plate, Montgomery was taken out of the game in a cast and eventually returned to the dugout with a boot. He was then later seen on the field postgame with crutches.

Due to the injury, the season has unfortunately come to an end for Montgomery. Schlossnagle made the announcement during his postgame press conference.

“I don’t think he’ll be back,” Schlossnagle said. “I don’t know the injury exactly. I haven’t talked to the doctors. But, yeah, I think he’s done for the year.”

Schlossnagle was asked about the injury in the midst of the game, being interviewed by ESPN. He did not sound optimistic at the time before confirming what everybody at Texas A&M feared.

“Obviously saw him,” Schlossnagle said. “Tried to score from second base and kind of a little bit of an awkward slide. I didn’t see if there was a collision or not, but yeah he’s banged up pretty good.”

Montgomery has been one of the best players in the country this season, just going on a tear for Texas A&M near the top of the lineup. He hit for an average of .322 while launching 27 home runs and knocking in 85 RBIs. Having an OPS well over 1.000 proved he was not only getting on base but recording extra-base hits consistently.

MLB teams will be discouraged to hear about Montgomery’s injury too. He was projected to go highly in the 2024 MLB draft later in the summer. Named one of the top players to watch during the Super Reigonals per MLB Pipeline, the same publication had Montgomery going No. 5 overall to the Chicago White Sox. How the injury affects his draft stock will be seen soon.

Texas A&M is just one win away from making the College World Series, hoping to close out Oregon on Sunday. But no matter how far the Aggies go the rest of the way, Montgomery will be in the dugout. If there is any positivity, he should continue to be the team’s biggest leader — just in a different role.
