Texas A&M got the all-important first win in the College World Series final when the Aggies beat the Tennessee Volunteers 9-5. It was a win that put Texas A&M and head coach Jim Schlossnagle one more win away from a national championship.

Now, Schlossnagle described the team’s mindset in Game 2 of the CWS with a chance to win the national championship on the line.

“I don’t meet with teams after games unless we’ve lost a tough one or if I’m upset with them about something,” Jim Schlossnagle said. “I don’t meet with teams after games. Haven’t done that since 2013. We’ll get on the bus. I’ll congratulate them on the win. They know it’s one game. We all know what’s at stake. There’s no Lombardi speech. We just try to keep them as loose as we can. We’ll hit in the cages and get our ground balls tomorrow and play.”

The Aggies jumped on the Volunteers early in Game 1. By the end of the third inning, Texas A&M had scored seven runs. Part of that was due to defensive mistakes by Tennessee and part of that was because of the aggressive bats in the Texas A&M lineup.

In Game 2, Jim Schlossnagle wants to try and attack early in the game again. After all, a team like Tennessee has more than enough firepower to blow an opponent out.

“I know it sounds coachy, but if you start thinking about things other than that, Tennessee is going to blow you out of this ballpark,” Schlossnagle said. “We’re facing a great team and we’re facing a great pitcher tomorrow. And I have no idea who we’re going to pitch. We’ll put it together. But we’ll just do what we do. That’s all we can do.”

Tennessee is getting ready to pitch Drew Beam in Game 2. He’s someone who the Aggies haven’t seen since March of the 2023 season.

For more than two decades and while with three different schools, Jim Schlossnagle has been one of the most successful coaches in all of college baseball. During that time, he’s gone to the College World Series seven times, including this season. However, this would be his first national championship as a head coach.

Texas A&M is a proud baseball program, with eight trips of its own to the College World Series in the team’s history. However, just like it would be for Schlossnagle, this would be the program’s first-ever national championship.
