Jimbo Fisher explains struggles for Texas A&M finding its offensive identity
Texas A&M struggled mightily against explosive Sun Belt powerhouse Appalachian State. After matching touchdowns into the 60s with North Carolina in week one, the Mountaineers impressed again, this time upsetting Texas A&M in College Station. A surprising loss for the Aggies.
So there were plenty of critiques for head coach Jimbo Fisher. When an expected SEC contender loses to a Sun Belt school at home, panic ensues. With the talent discrepancy, the SEC team ought to win in dominating fashion against those sort of teams. So how could the Aggies have possibly fallen?
Well, according to Fisher, Texas A&M’s widespread youth was a factor.
“Well, I just think we started young players. I think last year we had a freshman center. This year you’ve got another freshman center. You have a left guard and left tackle that’s young. You have a quarterback in both years, they’re still first-time starters. I mean, you had young players. Hopefully that’s it. We got to make sure we can get those guys executing. I thought we would have still played a little bit better.”

So Jimbo Fisher points his finger at the inexperience on the roster. That No. 1 recruiting class seems to be getting out of the gates rather slowly. He then continued, maintaining confidence that these youngsters will develop as the season progresses.

“Last year, the first game then, we had some turnovers. We still we blocked and did things a little bit better than we did [against Appalachian State], but we had some older guys in there, I think, up front. That’s a matter of time with those guys. Hopefully it happens very quickly this week. And quarterbacks managing things, and then, we got in the groove. But at the time, you know, those are things we got to continue to evaluate and and keep working on, no doubt.”
Look, Appalachian State is a good team. It’s a great win for a really good mid-major program (and a really rough look for this hooligan). They may not have been nearly as talented as the home team, but they made up for it in experience, clearly.
