Jimbo Fisher on having two capable quarterbacks: 'It makes you sleep well at night'
Conner Weigman is officially Texas A&M’s starting quarterback heading into their opener against New Mexico this weekend. However, with Max Johnson as the program’s QB2, Jimbo Fisher knows that the Aggies are in a better position with him there as a backup.
Fisher addressed the quarterback room in College Station during his press conference on Monday. He said that their scenario is what’s interesting about the position considering how distinctive that it is for a football team.
“It’s a unique position. Like, you can’t put anybody else there,” said Fisher. “You can’t move a tackle to a guard or a guard to a tackle. Quarterback is so different.”
To actually get into Weigman vs. Johnson, Fisher said that he believes that both quarterbacks can help Texas A&M reach a high level. Regardless of their order on the depth chart, having both available to them makes their team’s life a lot easier considering, in his opinion, there shouldn’t be much of a drop-off if they have to switch it up for any reason.
“Having two guys that you know can win, can win at a high level, and win a championship for you, in my opinion, and can play at those levels? It makes you sleep well at night,” said Fisher.
Both Weigman and Johnson competed with an extra option last fall in Haynes King. Each of the three quarterbacks threw over 70 passes for A&M in 2022 with Weigman going for 896 yards and eight touchdowns in five appearances while Johnson went for 516 yards and three scores in his four opportunities.
Having one quality quarterback is a luxury that not every program has. Having two, though, has Fisher feeling as good as he could at that spot heading into the fall.

Fisher names Conner Weigman as Texas A&M’s QB1
With the football season right around the corner, Jimbo Fisher named Conner Weigman as Texas A&M’s starting quarterback. After battling for the entirety of the offseason, he did enough to separate himself from the pack and will start for the Aggies in their opener versus New Mexico.
Weigman received his first game action versus South Carolina, stepping in relief for an injured Haynes King. He’d go on to start four of the last five games of the season for the Aggies, completing 55.3% of his passes for 896 yards and eight touchdown passes while throwing zero interceptions in the process.
The freshman especially impressed in the Aggies’ final game of the season where he helped lead Texas A&M to a 38-24 win over No. 5 LSU behind his 155 yards and two touchdown passes.
Weigman was a highly touted prospect out of high school. He was rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 4 quarterback in the nation according to On3’s Industry Ranking.
