Jimbo Fisher praises Conner Weigman, Bobby Petrino in season opener vs. New Mexico
Jimbo Fisher was quite pleased as he watched his Texas A&M Aggies carve up the New Mexico Lobos in their season opener on Saturday evening. The Aggies were dominating to the tune of a 42-10 beatdown heading into the fourth quarter, thanks in large part to the beautifully spun spirals from their star quarterback, Conner Weigman.
At the start of the fourth quarter, ESPN’s Quint Kessenich caught up with Aggies’ head coach Jimbo Fisher to talk about the masterful performance from his signal-caller and the beautiful play-calling from his newly hired offensive coordinator, Bobby Petrino.

How would Fisher describe the play of his star quarterback?
“Right now, very efficient. I mean, making the checks, getting the protections. They’re bringing every blitz known to man at him,” Fisher began. “Like I say. And he’s getting our protections right, knowing where the unblocked guy is, and getting the ball to the right guy. And I think he’s played an excellent game.”
He was one of the most highly regarded quarterback prospects in the 2022 cycle, and he played like it on Saturday evening. Weigman tossed five touchdown passes–a new career-high, in just three quarters of work. His day was done at the beginning of the fourth quarter. According to ESPN Stats & Info, he became the first player in Texas A&M history to complete five touchdown passes in a season opener.
Saturday night’s game was the first game in a really long time that Jimbo Fisher has not called the plays for his team on offense. What was the game like for him in handing over the play-calling duties to Bobby Petrino?
“Great. I feel great. We knew going in we had a great plan. That’s why we hired Bobby. This fits in well with all the adjustments we talked about and things are going great,” the Texas A&M head coach said.

He had a few more words of praise for his new offensive coordinator. Things have been going smooth and he likes what he has seen against New Mexico.
“Very smooth. Very smooth. Staff has done a great job and Bobby’s calling a great game,” Fisher said.
It’s not surprising in the slightest that Fisher has been pleased with Weigman and Petrino’s performances on Saturday night. The tandem has clicked early and the Aggies look very dangerous on the offensive side of the football. Weigman completed 18 of his 23 pass attempts for 236 yards through the air, while tossing in five touchdowns and no interceptions. Simply put, it was hard for him to look much better.
Texas A&M dominated New Mexico, 52-10 on Saturday evening. Next up for the Aggies, they’ll face the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks on Sept. 16. That one will kick off at 4:00 PM EST.
