When the season started with Texas A&M ranked No.6 in the nation, this was not the year that fans, players, and head coach Jimbo Fisher envisioned. It’s hard to say where it all went wrong for the Aggies in 2022, but Fisher has an idea of where to look. During his Monday press conference, the Aggies head coach revealed what has led to Texas A&M’s struggles.

“No. I mean you’ve got young players in some situations you had to fill in,” Fisher said, searching for an explanation. “Had some key injuries at different points in time, it just didn’t time together. But that’s no excuse, you’ve got to have it. You’re always fighting for inches.”

“When you’re successful in this league or any league, it’s much closer; when you have success, how close you are to not having the season you want is close. And when you don’t have success, having a good season is not as far away as you look at it. We just haven’t gotten over the hump on the plays. As a young group of players with a mix of older guys, we just haven’t found that perfect mix yet.”

The perfect mix has eluded the Aggies all season long, which has surprised many in the college football world. Texas A&M was expected to challenge Alabama for the SEC West crown this year. Instead, they are at the bottom of the division following their last loss to an Auburn squad who elected to fire their coach mid-way through the season. But the Aggies have hope for future years still. Texas A&M did bring in the NCAA’s best recuritiing in 2022. However, after another year of inconsistent play at quarterback, they might have to take a chance on the transfer portal in the offseason.

It’s too late for Texas A&M to make something of this season and earn a bowl bid. But it’s not too late for them to ruin someone else’s season. The Aggies will take on LSU at home in the final game of the year. The Tigers are ranked No. 6 and essentially hold their own destiny in their hands. If they win out and capture the SEC crown, they could make the College Football Playoff. But an Aggies win would cancel all of those hopes and dreams for the Tigers. It would also end the season, on a bright note, for Texas A&M.
