Jimbo Fisher and the Texas A&M Aggies are entering the 2022 campaign with high ambitions and a roster talented enough to make a run toward the College Football Playoff. Following the Aggies’ Maroon and White spring game over the weekend, Fisher met with the media and gave keen insight into the health of his squad, while providing a detailed recap of the positives and negatives from the scrimmage.

“Alright we got through spring game that don’t seem to be lingering into the fall,” Fisher opened his press conference.

“So that was a good thing, ya’ll don’t got to worry about that. I think Moko had a little ankle but that will be something that won’t be much time he will be back really soon.”

Jimbo Fisher is clearly referring to 6-foot-5 offensive lineman Jordan Spasojevic-Moko, the Australia native who saw limited action in his first season in College Station but based on early reports from the Aggies’ front man, could play a bigger role in 2022.

“Offensive line wise, we were solid until Moko went down and then we had to put [Blake] Trainor over there and we kept getting pressure with the twos. We got a little bit light there and it effected how we played. Good guys, seems like defense we played solid up front, I got to look at the film to judge what we did.”

Jimbo Fisher pleased with defense, notes offensive must improve but highlights two emerging playmakers

The Texas A&M coach has been high on the offense throughout spring practice, but weather conditions and the shakeup on the offensive line gave the edge to the Aggies’ defense, according to Fisher.

“It was a good competitive day on both sides,” Fisher said. “I thought the defense played well. It was a hard day to throw the football, the wind was about 25-30 miles per hour so it was tough trying to throw it, we wanted to, just to try to create less piles of guys, But we need to be better and need to catch it better too. Defense, we got some tipped balls and I thought we played the ball well.”

While it’s clear the defense shined during Saturday’s Maroon and White game, but Jimbo FIsher did make a point to highlight a few offensive bright spots from the day.

“I thought Amari ran the ball nicely, I saw some signs from one of the young guys, Yulkeith, catching the ball, running, doing things when we could get the ball underneath and were able to get it to him,” the Texas A&M coach said.

Fisher specifically mentioning two young offensive weapons seems telling. The Aggies’ coach has been high on running back Amari Daniels, who was slated as the third ball-carrier on the Aggies’ depth chart in 2021. With Isaiah Spiller headed to the NFL, the No. 13 running back in last year’s class according to On3 Consensus has a chance to take the reigns as the Aggies’ leader in the backfield.

Yulkeith Brown — the dynamic freshman WR who was also mentioned by Fisher — had offers from nearly every major program including Alabama, Georgia, Penn State, Florida, Miami, LSU and others.

The Miami, Fla. native chose to come to College Station and brings a dynamic skillset that has already caught the eyes of the Aggies’ head coach. He was a 4-star prospect and while Brown is listed as a wide receiver on the official depth chart, he was ranked as the No. 23 ATH of the 2021 class due to his versatility.

Overall, Jimbo Fisher saw glances of success offensively but gave the day to the defense. Still, he noted he’s been pleased with the play from his young quarterbacks and offense throughout spring ball but believed the weather and adverse conditions played a factor on Saturday, while acknowledging his team has to prevail no matter the adversity.

“But we got to throw it better — we’ve been throwing it well all spring I’ve been really pleased until today and I think the weather had a little something to do with it — but hey, you play in those days when it’s 30 degrees,” Fisher added.

It’s clear Texas A&M wants to throw deep in 2022, which should excite Aggies’ fans if Fisher and company are successful.

“Got to throw it better and offense has to get the ball downfield, but it wasn’t one of those days where we were able to do that. Last scrimmage we really threw well. We have to look at the film, improve, and what the team has to do now is get everyone healthy, have a great offseason and get ready for fall camp so we can do what we go to do”
