Evan Stewart came up big for Texas A&M in Saturday’s victory over Arkansas, scoring his team’s first touchdown of the game – and the first of his Aggie career – while trailing by two scores in the second quarter. Head coach Jimbo Fisher discussed how impressed he is with his true freshman wideout since arriving on campus this offseason.
“Evan is getting better and better. He’s growing as a freshman,” Fisher said after the Arkansas victory. “Let me see what he had. He had 36. We had a touchdown. There’s some other plays in there we tried to get it to him. I think he was sliding in there. Had one he could have got.
“But he’s just getting better. Evan is going to be a really good player. He’s very dynamic guy and can make plays. You saw that one we had called back, he can catch and run with it. He can get deep. He can do a lot of things. He’s getting better and better.”
On the season, Stewart has recorded 13 receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown, impressive numbers for the true freshman despite being suspended for Texas A&M’s win over Miami, along with three under freshmen for missing team curfew.

The No. 1 recruit out of Texas and the No. 2 receiver in the 2022 class, according to On3 Consensus, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four major recruiting media services. Stewart was sure to have eyes on him from the moment he stepped on campus, and he hasn’t disappointed on his opportunities on the field thus far.
“Like I say, [we are] a very, very young football team that kept its poise, kept its composure,” Fisher said. “… We’re a work in progress in what we have to do, and we have to keep grinding, but very proud of the guys we have.”
Stewart will have another opportunity to impress once again this Saturday on the road at Mississippi State as the Aggies look to improve to 2-0 in conference play and 4-1 overall.
