Joel Klatt takes shot at Texas A&M when discussing Brent Venables hire at Oklahoma
The Texas A&M Aggies have some familiar faces joining the SEC from the Big 12 within the next couple of years. Texas and Oklahoma will be making the switch over, with the 2025 season being the absolute latest the three will reunite.
Fox’s Joel Klatt was on The Herd, discussing Oklahoma hiring Brent Venables as their head coach. When talking about if he can adapt in the SEC, Klatt took a shot at the Aggies, saying once Oklahoma is in the conference, the Sooners will be back on top of their old Big 12 foe.
“You mean to tell me all of a sudden Texas A&M, after being linked with Oklahoma in the Big 12 and definitely being in its shadow for all of that time, is all of a sudden going to be the big brother on the block?,” Klatt said on Wednesday. “Texas A&M basically has no history as it compares to Oklahoma.”
Once the Big 12 formed in 1996, Oklahoma and Texas A&M faced each other 16 times, with the Sooners winning 11 of the matchups. However, as things stand, the Aggies have bragging rights at the moment, winning the 2013 Cotton Bowl.
Depending on how the SEC shapes the 16 team conference, the two programs will face off annually once again. Recruiting battles off the field will be just as intense, with the state of Texas fully becoming SEC territory.
LSU attempted to steal Jimbo Fisher from Texas A&M
The LSU Tigers and athletic director Scott Woodward had one of the most high-profile coaching searches over the past few months. Names such as James Franklin, Lincoln Riley, and Billy Napier were mentioned before pulling Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly out of South Bend.

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher was another name strongly linked with LSU. He and Woodward have a history together, making him the Aggies head coach in 2018. A few years later and the athletic director was reportedly trying to hire Fisher again.
Brett McMurphy of Stadium is reporting LSU was prepared to offer Fisher an 8-year, $125 million deal contract in late November. The $13 million per year would have been one of the highest salaries for a head coach in college football.
Fisher himself has a history with LSU, independent of Woodward, working in Baton Rouge from 2000-2006 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He won a national championship with Nick Saban during the 2003 season.
Instead, he will be staying in College Station, trying to win a national championship for the Aggies. A new challenge will be on the way with Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC within the next few seasons.
