Texas A&M has taken a beating at linebacker this offseason, losing some key bodies. One that would have hurt the most would have been Edgerrin Cooper, who was rumored to be entering the NCAA transfer portal. The Aggies’ fourth-leading tackler, he would be a devastating entry for head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Fans can rest easy, though, as Cooper shut down the rumors on Saturday. He posted a video announcing he will be staying in College Station to play another season with Texas A&M. A huge victory for the program and Cooper will now be expected to be a defensive leader heading into the 2023 season.

“Staying where I belong, owe y’all too much! Let’s work,” Cooper said.

Texas A&M is experiencing a decent amount of turnover this season, with a notable amount of players entering the portal. Most have been at depth positions, while a couple have been bigger names. Cooper would have fallen into the latter category.

Cooper will return for his senior season with high expectations from a personal standpoint. The goal will be getting Texas A&M back on that level as well in 2023.

Cooper appeared in all but one game last season with the Aggies, finishing with 61 tackles and eight tackles for a loss. Add in two forced turnovers and he was a bright spot on a rather dull season for Texas A&M.

Texas A&M to host cornerback transfer Tony Grimes

Former North Carolina defensive back Tony Grimes is on a visit at Texas A&M this week. The Tar Heels transfer shared the news of his arrival in a tweet on Thursday. He is coming off of a visit to Virginia Tech.

After visiting Texas A&M, Grimes has a visit set for USC.

Grimes spent three seasons with the Tar Heels, being one of the top corners in the ACC. He recorded 97 tackles throughout his career while getting an interception as well. He is the No. 11 best-available cornerback in the transfer portal, per On3’s rankings.

Grimes played high school football at Virginia Beach (VA) Princess Anne, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 19 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

After COVID relief for the 2020 season, Grimes has two seasons left to play at his next school. He can play immediately in 2023 since this is his first transfer.
