Texas A&M had plenty of reason to be happy in the first half against Auburn on Friday. Aggies coach Buzz Williams appeared to have some fun, as well — donning a headband at the under-four-minute media timeout.

Heading into a timeout with 3:23 to go, Williams decided to put on a headband as his team huddled up. During his brief halftime conversation with ESPN’s Marty Smith, he explained why he did it — and it turns out it isn’t the first time.

“I wear it a lot in practice because our guys think it’s funny,” Williams told Smith. “I was just trying to lighten the mood.”

Inside the box score: Texas A&M vs. Auburn

At the time, Texas A&M led Auburn 30-18 and Tyrece Radford was going to the line for an and-1. The Aggies ended up taking a 37-21 lead into the break thanks to a rough offensive performance in the first 20 minutes from Auburn. The Tigers shot just 16.2% from the floor and 15% from three-point territory to open the game.

For Texas A&M, Henry Coleman III led the way in the first half with 12 minutes and Radford added 11 points. As a group, the Aggies shot 45.5% from the floor and 55.6% from three-point land. They also forced five Auburn turnovers and turned them into six points.

But it wasn’t all good in the box score for the Aggies. Auburn had 11 offensive rebounds, but only turned them into three points. Williams told Smith he didn’t think that was sustainable, and it’s an area his team needed to improve in the second half.

“I think everybody except coach Pat Dodd got an offensive rebound in the first half,” Williams said. “Everybody on their team and Coach Dodd got an offensive rebound. We’ve got no shot if they keep killing us on the glass the way they were.”

Texas A&M hit a buzzer-beater in overtime to defeat Florida in the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday to defeat the Gators 83-80. Through one half, the Aggies continued to ride that momentum and send the No. 1 seeded Tigers into the locker room down 16 points.
