The Texas A&M Aggies have their next head baseball coach, Michael Earley, after he was promoted from being an assistant on the team. That comes after it looked like he, along with the rest of the staff, was headed to rival Texas.

Earley sat down with TexAgs since being hired. There, he reflected on the process and the timeline for being hired by Texas A&M.

“I got reached out to about interviewing for the job,” Michael Earley said. “Talked about it with my wife. Decided it was something I wanted to do. It happened really fast. So, just from talking with Trev [Alberts] on Zoom and some other people, it went really well and I was actually coming back to College Station anyway, just to see my family. So, the timing of it was absolutely perfect.”

Michael Earley had been Texas A&M’s hitting coach under Jim Schlossnagle. Together, they led the Aggies to Omaha and the College World Series but came up just a single game short of a national championship. Shortly following that final game, Schlossnagle and his staff left for Austin.

With that, the search for a new head coach began in College Station with Texas A&M reportedly taking swings at sitting head coaches like Tony Vitello and Brian O’Connor. However, the Aggies quickly turned their attention back to Michael Earley who was still upset about the national championship loss and dealing with his transition to a new school.

“I met with him again in person, but there was so much that was going on, so many phone calls, so many people reaching out, and it was a whirlwind for sure,” Earley said. “Then, you put that on transition to a different school and the fact that I still have not gotten over the loss in the national championship game. Like, I had my first nightmare the other night. I think I’ll probably have them the rest of my life. I still have not gotten over that — probably will never get over that.”

Texas A&M had tons of offensive success under Michael Earley, hitting a program record 136 home runs in 2024. The Aggies also had a slugging percentage of .543 and a team on-base percentage of .415 for the 2024 season.

“So, yeah, just a lot of different things, lot of moving pieces,” Earley said. “It seemed like it was slow in the moment but like you said, it happened pretty fast. They reached out, made contact. I think everything that I gave them in my plan for this team, they obviously loved and here we are today.”

The hope is that Michael Earley is going to be able to provide stability as the staff turns over and prevent too many players from leaving in the Transfer Portal. On top of that, he knows what it takes to win in College Station and now has the goal of winning that final game in Omaha.
