Mike Elko lays out plan for Year 2 improvement at Texas A&M
When Mike Elko got to Texas A&M, he had the benefit of both knowing the program having been an assistant there and inheriting a roster with potential. Still, there was a lot of work that went into turning the Aggies around to be a threat in 2024.
While making an appearance on And & Ari On3, Elko shared that the first thing he wanted to do was address the culture at Texas A&M. Now, he has a plan for improving again in his second season with the Aggies.
“I think and this is what I told our guys, we had to lay such a strong foundation of what college football culture should look like,” Mike Elko said. “What it should look like from an accountability standpoint, from a doing it the right way standpoint, from a commitment to doing things for the team standpoint.”
Going into the final week of the regular season, Texas A&M was in a position where with a win they could be in the SEC Championship Game. However, the Aggies suffered a close loss to rival Texas and fell to 8-4 on the season before their bowl game. That was improved from last season’s 7-6 mark. That came after Aggie fans had become frustrated with previous head coach Jimbo Fisher failing to live up to the on-field expectations by the end of his career with Texas A&M.

Mike Elko isn’t happy with that result, though, and now he’s looking to get his roster to take the next step in 2025.
“Now, what we’ve got to do is we’ve got to go out and we’ve got to become really good football players. Second year in the system,” Elko said. “Second year in the scheme. Having an opportunity of really going through the details of what we’re doing and how we’re doing it is, I think, going to be really critical. So, we’re excited to move this thing forward and get into year two and kind of finish the deal on what we started this year.”
Mike Elko will also be adding a talented recruiting class. Texas A&M has the ninth-ranked class in the 2025 recruiting cycle following the Early Signing Day, according to the On3 Industry football Team Recruiting Rankings. That includes two five-star recruits and 16 four-star recruits. On top of that, the Transfer Portal is in full swing to add new pieces and fill in the gaps on the Aggies’ roster.
