Texas A&M went to the Major League ranks to hire a new pitching coach in College Station. And after coming over to the Aggies from the Seattle Mariners organization, new pitching coach Max Weiner explained his decision.

Weiner, a member of the Mariners organization since 2018, has been a pro coach his entire career. But a self-proclaimed “college baseball rat,” Weiner was primed to make a jump into college baseball.

“And I’ve really always been a college baseball rat, so a lot of familiarity with this team and it was really exciting to really start that process,” Weiner said.

That, and a clear sense of connectivity among the coaching staff drew him in. Weiner hit it off with head coach Jim Schlossnagle quickly and saw the strong relationships with fellow assistants Nolan Cain and Mike Early.

He was ready to be a part of that intra-connected staff. He’d also heard strong reviews of the Aggies program from Mariners pitcher Bryce Miller, an alum.

“I spoke with coach Jim and we hit it off that day and one of the things that really drew me in was how connected the staff was and is and will be. So I got to connect with Jim, Nolan and Mike and everyone. And I’m very close with Bryce Miller so I certainly had heard a ton there,” Weiner said.

The feeling is mutual, as Schlossnagle is excited by the addition of Weiner to the staff

Speaking with the media after making it official, Schlossnagle elaborated on how excited he is for Weiner to join the Aggies, and how it’s helping Texas A&M get back on track this offseason.

“Just super exciting time you know, since we finished playing at Stanford, it’s been pretty unsettled around here, which none of us liked, but that’s part of transition, when somebody makes the decision to go somewhere else. And then certainly, you know, this time of the year your roster is in a lot of transition, trying to figure out what that is relative to the Major League (Baseball) Draft, the transfer portal, what your own current players want to do,” Schlossnagle said. “So yeah, we feel good about the last you know, 48 hours, of getting Coach Max [Weiner] on board.

“Getting him to work. He’s been great, with — came down in his interview, didn’t check a bag. Just a carry on. Has been hanging out here ever since. So, or not just hanging out, he’s been working. … It’s been exciting. … So we’re slowly getting this thing back on steady water.”
