Jimbo Fisher upset with offense in first half of Texas A&M-Appalachian State
Jimbo Fisher‘s No. 6 Aggies squad went into halftime tied 7-7 with the Mountaineers, looking a bit sluggish early on for the second straight week. After surrendering a brief early lead in the Texas A&M–Appalachian State game, the Aggies drew level with a 26-yard Devon Achane touchdown run, knotting the score in the first half.
Fisher wasn’t too pleased with his team’s execution in the first 30 minutes.
“Well we’ve got to get stops on defense. We’ve got to get off (the field),” Fisher told the ESPN2 broadcast crew just after halftime. “They’ve converted two or three fourth downs. But they’re managing the clock. We’ve got to stop the run, win the downs and be good on third down. They’ve popped some third-down runs.”
Texas A&M-Appalachian State a defensive struggle early
The Aggies managed to gain just 104 total yards in the first half, stymied by a sound Mountaineers defensive effort. Appalachian State, on the other hand, benefited from clean offensive play.

Texas A&M failed to sack Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice in the first half, while Aggies quarterback Haynes King fumbled twice. One of King’s fumbles led directly to the Mountaineers’ lone scoring drive in the first half.
Fisher mostly lamented the poor offensive play at halftime.
“Offensively we’ve got to move the ball,” he said. “We come out the first drive, get a nice drive, get a penalty for not snapping the ball. Then next drive, we get a pass protection, we’ve got a guy open and we’re going to make the throw, then we score and we come back, got another missed double-team block, a guy don’t double team. We’ve got to play clean. The plays are there, we’ve got to get back and execute, keep our poise, get the ball on offense and we’ve got to get some stops on defense and win the field position, get off the field on third down.”
