Paul Finebaum doesn’t see Jimbo Fisher going anywhere soon. During an appearance on “The Matt Barrie Show” on Sunday, Finebaum revealed the Texas A&M head coach’s status with the program.

“The [temperature of Jimbo Fisher’s seat] is moderately mild, believe it or not,” Finebaum said. “I spoke to everybody that’s anybody at that university, and I didn’t I didn’t hear from any any muckety mucks that Jimbo Fisher is in trouble.”

Finebaum’s diagnosis might surprise some fans. Despite defeating Auburn 27-10 on Saturday, Texas A&M is unranked due to a stunning loss to Miami in Week 2. Nonetheless, Aggies fans are no strangers to disappointment.

After boasting top-10 recruiting classes from 2019-22, Texas A&M fell flat last season, posting a miserable 5-7 record. While it appears the Aggies won’t repeat this painful history, they certainly aren’t expected to finish atop the SEC.

Although the words seem ridiculous now, they were a very real possibility not so long ago. Texas A&M initially hired Fisher in December 2017 on a 10-year, $75 million contract. The relationship blossomed early with Fisher leading A&M to a 26-10 record in his first three seasons in the driver’s seat.

After Fisher and Co. posted a 9-1 mark and nearly made the College Football Playoff, Texas A&M rewarded the coach with a 10-year, fully guaranteed contract extension worth $94.95 million on Sept. 1, 2021. Since the extension, Fisher has led the Aggies to a mediocre 16-12 record.

A future with Jimbo Fisher

Despite Fisher’s subpar output, Finebaum claims he has no reason to worry about job security.

“I know that may disappoint the haters out there, but I think it would take something really — the bottom just completely falling out for that to be affected,” Finebaum said. “They do not want to let go of him is how I would characterize the move.”

Since losing to Miami, Fisher has righted the ship for the Aggies. Texas A&M dominated Auburn on Saturday, exploding for 402 yards while giving up just 200 total yards. The Aggies’ run game was especially impressive, tallying 209 rushing yards.

Fisher ultimately believes his program isn’t as far away from the College Football Playoff as many might assume.

“We just have to keep the faith and confidence to do that,” Fisher said. “We have to play on the road better. We have to keep our maturity. But I do think we have a good team and I do think we will. But saying and doing it are two different things. We’ve been close but we have to keep fighting

“I think once you get there, you realize ‘I know how to do this.’ I do think we’re close. At the same time, I think you’re just as far or just as close as you want to be. I really mean that. It’s all based on your work ethic and attitude.”
