Jimbo Fisher took some of the heat off of himself with his work in the offseason and what was a good opener to this season. However, after this weekend’s 48-33 loss at Miami, Paul Finebaum says the pressure is back on in College Station.

Finebaum spoke about the spotlight on Fisher during ‘The Matt Barrie Show’ on Sunday afternoon. He believes trust in Texas A&M is now back to being shaky at best as the interest in his new staff hires and from their 42-point opening win has worn off.

“The situation with A&M now? Tenuous is a good word. Because, with every game now, the microscope is back on,” said Finebaum.

“All the attention about Bobby Petrino? That, really, accomplished absolutely nothing,” said Finebaum. “It proves that we read so much into first games that don’t mean anything.”

Texas A&M handled their business in their first game of the year against New Mexico. Even so, everyone knew that their trip to Coral Gables was going to be the first benchmark of their season.

The Aggies didn’t pass the test either with the 15-point loss to the Hurricanes. Their offense was good enough at times but finished with three turnovers. That didn’t help their defense as A&M allowed 451 yards overall as well as five passing touchdowns from QB Tyler Van Dyke. Their special teams also gave up a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown.

Any losses were going to put a certain amount of attention on Fisher considering how bad things got a season ago. With an early defeat before conference play even starts, though, Finebaum has his concerns about how quickly this could turn around on Fisher again this fall.

Finebaum: Fisher’s buyout will not be a factor if A&M is mediocre again

Paul Finebaum thinks a fresh face could take over Texas A&M in the near future.

Fans are furious with Jimbo Fisher after the Aggies fell 48-33 to an unranked Miami squad on Saturday. Finebaum believes it won’t take much more disappointment for the tides to shift in College Station.

“I mean every conversation about Jimbo Fisher — I feel like we’re on Wall Street on Jim Cramer’s report,” Finebaum said on ‘The Matt Barrie Show’. “You have to talk about money. And, at some point, A&M officials have to look and go, ‘Oh, are we going to let $75 million affect the progress of this program?’”

Finebaum can’t blame the people in College Station for tiring from the losing.

“At the end of the season, if A&M is looking at a mediocre record? That $75 million will not be a factor,” Finebaum said. “Presidents don’t make those decisions in places like Texas A&M. It’s the guys with the cowboy hats.”

“I don’t think (Fisher) will be able to survive if they don’t reach a certain mark. It’s a little bit hard to tell on September 10 what that number is. But if they are losing games like this on a consistent basis? Then he has no future.”
