Paul Finebaum: This year has been a complete and total disaster for Texas A&M

Texas A&M endured their third straight loss, and fourth in six games, yesterday when South Carolina defeated them 30-24 in Columbia. It was just the latest disappointment in what has become a very underwhelming season down in College Station. In Paul Finebaum’s opinion, this year is already a total loss for Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies.

Finebaum criticized Fisher and his team’s 3-4 record during a recap of Week 8 from ESPN. He says Fisher’s smooth-talking won’t be able to help him escape the critiques of him and his tenure much longer, even with the extra protection of having just brought in the nation’s top recruiting class.

“Jimbo is a quick talker. Everybody remembers the meltdown with Saban, which now seems like 100 years ago. And all he has to show for himself is a win over Alabama and the No. 1 recruiting class. But No. 1 recruiting classes do not live for long,” said Finebaum. “That puts you in really serious jeopardy. He’s recruiting well but we’re a long way from signing day and there’s nothing he can do now. There’s nothing he can do to stem the criticism and the speculation.”

A&M entered the year as a potential contender to finally break into the College Football Playoff field. However, an early loss to Appalachian State ruined those goals early. They’ve never recovered them this season either. Now, the Aggies are just trying to find a way to be bowl-eligible by the end of the season.

That shift of expectations is what has Finebaum believing in the idea that Fisher may be on the hot seat. They’ve blown this opportunity and there may not be a chance for Fisher to pick up the pieces.

“This was not a rebuilding year or a transitional year…Do not be misled by anything you hear from A&M. This season has been a complete and total disaster,” Finebaum said.

A&M may genuinely be fighting to make it to the postseason by the end of the year. Besides a matchup versus UMass, they still have to face Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn, and LSU. The Aggies may very well get there but, regardless, it’s a finish far below the expectations for Fisher and A&M coming in. It may also be what seals Fisher’s fate if Texas A&M were to elect to go in a different direction after 2022.
