Paul Finebaum wouldn't be surprised if Jimbo Fisher got another job as a head coach

Texas A&M Set to Part Ways With Jimbo Fisher

On Sunday morning, Texas A&M parted ways with head coach Jimbo Fisher. In doing so, the Aggies are set to pay Fisher a buyout of $76.8 million. If he doesn’t want to work again, Fisher doesn’t need to work again.

Still, as Paul Finebaum explained on The Matt Barrie Show, Fisher could get another head coaching job if he wants to get one.

“I’ll give Jimmy Sexton credit because I think he engineered this,” Paul Finebaum said. “Getting Jimbo out after a win, feelings aren’t all that bad. Yeah, this is — the drumbeat today wasn’t all that hot for Jimbo Fisher. It would’ve been in a few weeks after the fifth loss.”

At the time that Texas A&M landed Jimbo Fisher, it was a major coup. The Aggies took him from Florida State, where he had won a national championship. However, now in his sixth season with Texas A&M, Fisher had compiled a 45-25 record overall but just a 27-21 record in SEC play.

“But he could find a job if he wanted,” Finebaum said. “I’m not saying a top-tier job. Maybe that’s gonna lessen the buyout. I have no idea how it could lessen it very much, by the way.”

Considering the buyout, many people would assume that Jimbo Fisher wouldn’t want to return to a high stress environment. Certainly, Matt Barrie and Paul Finebaum agree they wouldn’t.

“But Jimbo’s a — he’s one of the all-time strange folks that you will meet in this industry,” Paul Finebaum said. “I don’t see Jimbo doing well breeding cattle and I think he wants to coach. That’s who he is. By the way, I really don’t care because it’s not like Jimbo Fisher is ever going to be relevant on this program again.”

There are already several jobs open, and several more will open, that Jimbo Fisher may have an interest in. However, to Finebaum’s point, that likely won’t be at the SEC level moving forward.

Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork releases statement in formal announcement of Jimbo Fisher’s firing

Following the news that Texas A&M and Jimbo Fisher would be parting ways, athletic director Ross Bjork released a statement on the decision.

“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President Welsh and then Chancellor Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision,” Bjork wrote

“We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
