Jimbo Fisher updates the status of Max Johnson's thumb injury ahead of Alabama game
Max Johnson is one of many SEC West quarterbacks dealing with an injury this week. The Texas A&M signal-caller hurt his thumb against Mississippi State and was not able to finish the game. Now, his status heading into a massive showdown against Alabama is in question.
When providing an update on Johnson, head coach Jimbo Fisher echoed the same from earlier in the week. He said everything will be taken day-to-day and hopes the injury will continue to get better leading up to Saturday’s game in Tuscaloosa.

“Same thing,” Fisher said. “We’re going day-to-day with him every day. It will get better each day hopefully.”
Johnson has stepped in for Texas A&M this season and saved the offense at times. Fisher originally announced Haynes King as the starter but after a poor start, a change was needed. Miami was the first game Johnson played in and has guided the Aggies to a 2-1 record over the past few weeks.
Fisher will continue to run Johnson out there as the starting quarterback, if healthy. Either way, it will be a tough ask against Alabama this weekend.

Conner Weigman “can play” if Max Johnson is not available
Johnson is not able to go for Texas A&M this week against Alabama, head coach Jimbo Fisher will have two options. Haynes King, who won the starting job out of fall camp, or true freshman Conner Weigman would be the Aggies’ starter in what should be a hostile atmosphere in Tuscaloosa. However, when Johnson did get hurt on Saturday, it was King who stepped in.
Fisher was asked if Weigman would have a shot at earning the job if Johnson is unavailable. The Texas A&M head coach said there will be competition in the days leading up to the game. But Fisher did have high praise for the freshman, saying he “can” play if called upon.
“They’ll compete every day,” Fisher said. “The best player is going to play. Conner can play. We could put him in right now. I mean, he would be very comfortable. He’ll have a great week of practice hopefully and be ready to play. He prepares every week just like that.”
To this point, Weigman has been the third-string quarterback and has not gotten any action. He was a spring semester enrollee for Texas A&M — meaning he’s had an extra few months of work in the offense. At the very least, Weigman is not working with anything brand new.
