Cole Cubelic describes dynamic of relationship between Jimbo Fisher, Bobby Petrino
The story of Day One at SEC Media Days? Jimbo Fisher and his new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. Everyone in Nashville wanted to know who truly would be calling plays at Texas A&M this season after a disastrous 2022. While Fisher was on the podium, he said Petrino would “maybe” be the guy but gave a definite answer on a later appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show.
An underrated aspect of the hiring of Petrino is how the offensive room will gel together. There are a few personalities besides those two, including offensive line coach Steve Addazio. Some were wondering if the staff would mesh together and become one or just do whatever Fisher ultimately wants.
ESPN’s Cole Cubelic thinks Petrino will be able to make his mark on Texas A&M due to his personality. He is not going to let Fisher push him over, having experience as an SEC head coach himself. Petrino was hired for a reason and will make sure his ideas are heard.
“Bobby will stand up to Jimbo,” Cubelic said via Andy Staples On3. “I don’t mean that in a negative way. A lot of younger guys would say ‘alright coach. Whatever you say goes.'”
The overarching thought is Fisher would truly be the one calling plays. Many believe he is too stubborn to actually give them up and hiring Petrino is just a smokescreen to make seem like changes are being made. His comments on Monday did not help the case either.

“I’m not going to get into that,” Fisher said when asked who could call plays. “Bobby was hired for a reason. Tremendous guy. Tremendous football mind. Hopefully, he’ll call the game & have suggestions.”
Cubelic does not seem too worried and believes Petrino will make sure to get his words in. After all, he does have a background in the conference.
When Petrino was at Arkansas, he was considered one of the SEC’s top head coaches. He had Hawg Nation soaring with multiple double-digit win seasons in the early 2010s. Of course, off-the-field issues got in the way and ultimately led to Petrino leaving the program.
Now, all we can do is wait and see how results turn out on the field. Only then will we truly know if last season in College Station was an anomaly or if it’s actually the direction the program is trending. Either way, do not expect Petrino to go down without a fight if put in that position.
