Texas A&M is set to hire John Perry in a role on the offensive staff, according to a report from Pete Thamel of ESPN. He worked as an assistant wide receiver coach at Rutgers the last two years and is a veteran coach that worked with the Houston Texans as their tight ends coach and receivers’ coach.

In their first year under head coach Mike Elko, the Aggies went 8-5 overall this year, including 5-3 in the SEC. They lost in the Las Vegas Bowl to the USC Trojans, 35-31.

Rutgers had three wide receivers with over 400 receiving yards in 2024, as Dymere Miller hauled in 757 receiving yards. Ian Strong and KD Duff also finished with over 1,000 receiving yards combined. Strong earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors this year.

Perry was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Sam Houston State Bearkats in 2022. This was during a time in which the program was making the transition from FCS (Division I-AA) to Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A).

Before that, when he worked with the Houston Texans (2019), he helped their receivers set a team record for the most overall touchdowns scored (46) in a single season. Their passing game also set franchise records for highest red zone touchdown percentage (64.2 percent) and the fewest three-and-outs (24). Under the guidance of Perry, DeAndre Hopkins earned his third straight Pro Bowl honor. He hauled in 104 catches for 1,165 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

The 2018 version of the Houston Texans won an AFC South crown with a 11-5 record. Rookie wideout Keke Coutee hauled in 11 catches for 109 receiving yards in his NFL debut. Perry also served as the Texans’ tight ends coach from 2014-2016.
