Report: Texas A&M suspends Ainias Smith after DWI arrest on drug, gun charges
Texas A&M has suspended Ainias Smith, per school policy, after his Wednesday morning arrest, according to The Athletic’s Sam Khan. Despite being named a team captain, the school will also remove the junior wide receiver from his scheduled appearance at SEC Media Days in Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday as a result.
A Texas A&M spokesperson also added that head coach Jimbo Fisher is aware of the situation and looking into the details.
Ainias Smith was initially arrested early Wednesday morning for driving while intoxicated, according to multiple reports. He then received additional charges for carrying an unlawful weapon and possessing marijuana, although it was less than two ounces.
This marks the second time a Texas A&M wide receiver has faced criminal charges this offseason. Demond Demas was arrested by police in connection with an assault family violence charge and eventually left the program by entering the transfer portal.

More about Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith is expected to play a major role in the offense for head coach Jimbo Fisher, especially with a new quarterback taking over this season. He led the Aggies in receptions last season, finishing with 47. Only tight end Jalen Wydermyer finished with more receiving yards, with Smith having 509 and also added six touchdowns to his resume.
There have been outlets to name Smith to preseason All-American teams and he was even identified as one of six players not receiving enough NFL Draft attention by On3’s Matt Zenitz. Smith is still most likely to suit up for Texas A&M this season and live up to the expectations.
Fisher has been working on fixing the wide receiver room in College Station, even with some of the off-the-field issues. Texas A&M signed the On3 Consensus‘ No. 2 and No. 3 receiver in the 2022 class with Evan Stewart and Chris Marshall.
