Texas A&M TE announces decision to turn pro, pens letter to Aggie Nation

Jimbo Fisher has done an excellent job recruiting for the Texas A&M Aggies, with the results showing up on the field. Now, the talent will be making the next step to the NFL, with another Texas A&M player deciding to make the jump to the next level on Monday.

Tight end Jalen Wydermyer announced he would be turning pro and declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft. He will also be opting out of Texas A&M’s matchup against Wake Forest in the Gator Bowl.

Wydermyer took to Twitter to announce his decision. After spending three seasons with the program, he penned a letter to Aggie Nation, thanking them for the support.

“Aggie Nation, 12th man, and the entire College Station community, from my first visit on campus, I felt at home,” Wydermyer said. “Thank you for making me one of your own.

“After much prayer, thought, and consideration I have decided to forgo the bowl game and my remaining eligibility to declare for the 2022 NFL Draft.”

Texas A&M Aggies HC Jimbo Fisher discusses bowl opt outs

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher wants to see a change in the College Football Playoff setup.

With the way things are currently built, there are only four teams that make the playoff, with everyone else left playing for lesser bowl games. With so many players nowadays opting out to prepare for the NFL Draft, Fisher wants to see playoff expansion to try and entice players to stay in school.

Fisher said that he doesn’t have any issues with the players that opt-out to prepare for their futures, but he offered some advice for players that aren’t locked to be early NFL Draft picks.

“I mean the opt-outs are here to stay,” Fisher started. “I’m a believer of if you’re a high pick and you know you’re going, I get it. Here’s what I think. If you’re a third-rounder or below, the NFL doesn’t have a lot of money invested in you. What I’m saying is you have your signing bonus. I think the more you play, it’s better. But guys have their own opinion on that, that’s just me.

“Personally, if I was drafting a guy that’s what I would see. But that’s just part of it. And it’s opportunities for young guys to go play. Those guys that opted out, they’ve done a tremendous job for us. I have no disrespect for that at all. They make their own choices in what they do and that’s just the way the world is.”
