Texas A&M Associate AD Alan Cannon comments on reported hire of Trev Alberts
On Wednesday morning, reports emerged of Texas A&M hiring Trev Alberts away from Nebraska to become its next athletic director. To this point, nothing official has been put out by either school as the deal waits to get finalized. There has already been pushback from the Nebraska side, saying they have not been notified of a decision from Alberts.
Now, Texas A&M has come out and commented on the situation. Associate athletic director Alan Cannon claims he has not been made aware of any hire being made, let alone Alberts.
“Texas A&M President Mark Welsh appointed a seven-person committee to search for our new Director of Athletics,” Cannon said. “I have not received any notification from the President or anyone on the committee at this time.”
Cannon is the associate athletics director for media relations, being with Texas A&M since 1989. He originally served as the football team’s SID but was promoted in Sept. 2003 and has been a staple in the athletic department since.
Alberts leaving Nebraska would come as a major shock, leaving a place he is highly regarded for his football playing days. He is a Butkus Award winner and earned consensus All-American status in the early 1990s. Nebraska even retired his number and No. 34 will never be worn by a Husker again.
However, the Nebraska side has shut down the idea of Alberts being hired, at least for the time being. People from their athletic department have spoken on the matter as well, saying no decision has been made. As the rest of us are, they are shocked Alberts would leave Lincoln too.
“University of Nebraska Executive Associate AD & CFO Doug Ewald tells our @ketvlincoln — as of 1:38, Trev Alberts has not made a decision at this time,” Andy Kendeigh of KETV said via X. “Ewald says the news of this has been a shock to the management team.”

Trev Alberts reportedly leaving Nebraska after AD stint, legendary playing career
After a short professional career and a stint in media, Alberts got into administration and was hired by Omaha in 2009. He stayed for over a decade until he earned the Nebraska job, joining the Huskers in 2021.
Nebraska had recently given Alberts a contract extension as well, with On3’s Pete Nakos saying Texas A&M is facing a buyout of around $4.1 million.
Just as Texas A&M had football moves to make recently, Alberts had the massive decision of firing Scott Frost after the 2021 season. He was able to bring in Matt Rhule and seemingly, the football program is finally back on the right track.
Alberts will now have to watch from afar while working alongside Elko and others inside of the Texas A&M athletic department.
