Buzz Williams confirms he matched $1,000 for fan after hitting halfcourt shot
Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams stuck to his word and rewarded an Aggies fan with $1,000 after she nailed a halfcourt shot during Saturday’s game against Florida.
Texas A&M offered up $1,000 if the fan made the shot, which she did, and Williams agreed to match the Aggies athletics department. Buzz Williams had the fan on his radio show on Monday.
“I said I would match it, and I wrote a check to you this morning,” Williams said.
While Williams did his part, as of Monday night, the fan had not received the $1,000 from the Texas A&M athletics department. However, Williams assured her that she would get it soon.
“We have a lot of institutional problems that need recognized,” he said laughing.
Williams was in a good mood after the Aggies rallied for a 67-66 win over the weekend. He did make one request of the fan.
“That check that you got, it has [my wife’s] name on it, and it actually has our address on it. So if you don’t mind, please don’t take a picture of that. Please don’t Tweet that out,” Williams said. “We don’t need any more publicity about where we live or who my wife is or any of that. Because I write like one check per nine years. That’s the first check I’ve written in forever.”
While Williams doesn’t write checks very often, he was happy to for this lucky fan. The shot caromed off the backboard and went in. You can check out the fan’s terrific shot below.

“The check that I wrote you, the check book is in the bag that was my Virginia Tech business bag. That’s how long it’s been… like, I don’t write checks,” Williams said.
In addition to being a Texas A&M fan, the person who made the shot also played high school basketball and is currently a middle school basketball coach. Williams joked that perhaps he should add her on staff and have her help for the rest of the year.
“Hey, I paid you $1,000 to coach shooting for the month of February… how about that?” he said.
The Aggies return to action on Wednesday at Missouri, before hosting Tennessee this weekend. Perhaps another fan cane earn some money with a halfcourt shot against the Vols.
Texas A&M is 13-8 (4-4) entering the matchup against Missouri but has won three of its past four games.
