Jimbo Fisher shares mindset from viral moment of near collision with Auburn player
Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher had one of the most viral moments of the college football season to date this past weekend when he found himself out on the field — in the middle of the action — as a play unfolded against Auburn.
Aggies running back Rueben Owens took a handoff and started running to his right during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game, when Tigers defensive back Kayin Lee delivered a big blow and forced a fumble.
The fumble was recovered by Auburn DB Eugene Asante, who picked up the ball and started rumbling down the sidelines, sprinting past Fisher, who had wandered out onto the field.
On Monday, Fisher was asked what was going through his head as the play unfolded and he realized he was in the middle of the action.
“Nothing. How in the hell’d he get the ball? Because I didn’t see us fumble. I didn’t see us fumble. I mean seriously, I thought he was tackled. I didn’t see it,” Fisher said. “And I was trying to get Max’s attention on something, and it was kind of like, ‘Well.’”
This isn’t the first time Jimbo Fisher has found himself out on the field as a play unfolded. However, during previous instances, it occurred during practice and not during the middle of the game.
“I mean you do it in practice all the time,” Fisher said. “They run by you, so you know, they ran by and I stepped off the field and it was going. I shouldn’t have been out there, but I thought the play was dead.”

Asante ended up returning the fumble 67 yards for a touchdown as Auburn cut the Texas A&M lead to 20-10. The Aggies went on to win the game 27-10, to improve to 3-1 (1-0).
Fisher watched as the play was unfolding, but after Owens received the initial blow, he thought the play was over.
“When he got hit, I did not see the fumble, you know what I mean?” Fisher said. “I thought he went down on the tackle. And my eyes went back, because I was trying to get Max’s attention on something else. And that was what happened. I shouldn’t have been out there.”
No, Fisher shouldn’t have been out there, but it did lead to a hilarious moment. You can see the video below:
