Mike Elko updates injury recovery of Conner Weigman
Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman missed most of last season with a foot injury. Aggies head coach Mike Elko shared recently that Weigman is still working his way back to 100 percent.
The sophomore is taking part in spring practice, but he’s not yet back fully healthy after being injured last September, per Elko.
“Still battling,” Elko said when asked where Conner Weigman is at from a health standpoint. “He’ll be out there practicing. I don’t think he’s exactly where he’d like to be long-term. Not that he’s behind or anything or hasn’t done what he’s supposed to do or there’s concerns. I just think he would obviously like to be a little bit healthier.”
Weigman excelled as a dual-threat quarterback last year, averaging more than 5 yards per carry. However, he won’t be running much this spring as he works to get back to full strength.
“He’ll be able to work efficiently as a pocket passer. I don’t know how well he’ll be able to truly run around yet,” Elko said. “He still hasn’t quite been fully out there doing agility work and those types of things.”
Conner Weigman averaged 300 passing yards per game and accounted for 10 total touchdowns in the three games he played when healthy last year.
However, overall it was a disappointing season for Texas A&M, a program that brought in Mike Elko this offseason to replace Jimbo Fisher.

With Collin Klein taking over as the offensive coordinator, there’s a new system for Weigman and the rest of the Texas A&M offense to learn this spring. Even if he’s not 100 percent, getting reps is crucial for Weigman.
“It’s important to get him out there and get him integrated in the system,” Elko said.
After Weigman went down last season, Texas A&M relied on three other quarterbacks in Max Johnson, Jaylen Henderson and Marcel Reed.
Johnson transferred to North Carolina this offseason, but Henderson and Reed stayed in College Station. They are battling with Weigman for the starting job ahead of the 2024 season.
“Conner’s going to go into the spring as the No. 1 guy, but we’ve also had two other quarterbacks play very effectively — Jaylen Henderson at the end of the season, and then Marcel Reed in the bowl game,” Elko said. “So like every position across the board, there’s competition this spring, and Conner certainly needs to be out there and be a part of it.”
